MEDICINAL PLANTS

Perennial plant development grows with a very thickened rootstock, located at ground level, from which emerge a few stems that can reach almost one meter high, provided the land and growing conditions are adequate. We find in areas close to human settlements, for being a showy plant is widely cultivated on the other hand, thanks to its rhizome, although its cultivation will be continued to deteriorate for many years. FLOWERING

Flowering occurs between April and June, depending on the weather where it develops. The flowers are blue and are arranged in a bouquet at the top of the stem, in time of flowering is very showy appearance, so it is used extensively as an ornamental plant in landscaping. Harvesting is done preferably in the month of August, removing the most outer bark of the rhizome and carrying out drying in the sun.

APPLICATIONS

Contains essential oils and flavonoids as well as Iron ketones alpha and beta. It also has starch, mucilage and calcium oxalate in the rhizome. At low doses is used as expectorant, diuretic in balsamic and bronchitis, asthma and gastrointestinal spasms. In large doses, is used as an emetic (vomit) and much higher doses acts as a drastic purgative. It is now widely used in perfumery, but rarely used in medicine.

ADMINISTRATION

Infusion. The addition of two grams of crushed rhizome to 250 milliliters of boiling water, steeping for ten minutes, the liquid obtained is used to soften the mucus and facilitate expectoration in bronchitis processes.
Decoction. He added ounces of crushed roots to a quart of water, leaving boiling for two minutes, then allowed to stand away from the fire, another ten minutes. This yields a liquid that is optimal for making and improve mouth rinses cases of stomatitis.
Mother tincture. It is sold in specialized stores, being able to use a rate of ten drops in half a glass of water, this operation can be repeated up to twice a day and acts as a good expectorant and diuretic. However, should not exceed this dose in preventing emetic or purgative effect.
